		<description>

Amber Ablett (she/her) is an artist and writer based in Vestlandet, Norway. Using performance, text, sound and re-enactment, her work looks at the importance of belonging to how we be together, with a focus on how our society shapes, reflects, controls and limits our multifaceted identities.
Ablett uses her own stories of generational migration and Afro-European descent, as starting points to create a space for questioning, communality and critical thinking; she is interested in how we learn about ourselves through learning about other people and the conflict between our internal and perceived sense of home.
Stepping away from spectacle, Ablett often uses workshops and gatherings as an alternative to normative exhibition frameworks.

Mixtape.
2024Workshop framework.

Through this workshop, we practice listening together using exercises from Pauline Oliveros’ theory of Deep Listening and Gestalt awareness experiments. We will explore how listening can become part of liberation practices and how we can centre it within artistic practices. We explore the ways that music, lyrics and sound can affirm our identities and create community. We practice listening to help us take ownership over our choices and power in where we direct our attention.

See also Workshop with Miki Gebrelul. My Fathers Left is a sound and video installation, in the form of a poetic
sonic essay housed within a wooden listening structure, and
collaborative project. The work has been commissioned for Borealis
Festival for Experimental Music, opening on 14th March 2024.

My Fathers Left explores the narratives around Black fatherhood, from
the perspective of children of the African diaspora. The project has
included a series of workshops for BIPOC in 2023, about the fears and
vulnerability of storytelling, and in 2024 with Touki, a Bergen-based
Black arts collective, about poetic tactics for repeating, implanting and
reclaiming our own stories.

The sonic essay begins with my own exploration into how the
narratives that British, Norwegian and Western society teach us shaped
and warped the way I saw my relationship with my own father and my
own history. The work speaks to the privileges and oppressions of white
supremacy as they appear in intimate bi- and multi-racial family histories
and the simultaneity of generational migration.

The sonic essay is shared as an installation, comprised of five sound
channels- a mixtape played through a boombox and a video within a wooden listening structure which holds four speakers. The
work weaves together tracks from Trinidadian and Caribbean calypso,
soca and reggae, a British
police show from the 1990s, storytelling and writings from W. E. B. Du
Bois, Marcus Garvey and others. The shape of the wooden structure is
based on the wooden stands that are used to hold up boats when they
are brought onto dry land.A prologue to the sound installation, which was co-written during the
2023 workshops, was played at the 20 yeat anniversary opening concert of Borealis Festival in 2023.

Hvileåret x Hearing Home
2024Retreat for Black women + in collaboration with researcher, Ro Averin.
As an extension of the artisic research project Hvileåret, looking at the role of rest in activism, I joined Ro Averin to co-host the third iteration of her retreat project, Hearing Home. The retreat took place on the lighthouse island of Skomvær in the Røst archipeligo about 100km out to sea from&#38;nbsp;Bodø/Bådåddjo and collectively built a space of rest, escape and connection away from the weights of living in a racialised society.
During the retreat, we spent time in nature, cooking good food, reading and talking, and I held a series of workshop that draw on my wider practice.

Spoon carving :
Through out the Spoons/Ignoring project, I’ve used collective spoon carving as a way for us to practice becoming absorbed in the present- which itself can be a survival tactic when living in a racialised, hetronormative society. Ignoring offers us a small space to turn away from the world, whether this is to reflect, process or rest.

Deep listening workshops:

A listening workshop in two parts- first, after an introduction to Pauline Olivero’s feminist deep listening practices, we did some exercises to listen in nature, hearing sounds as materials and holders of stories and histories. And an evening session, we each selected two songs that were meaningful to us and listened together and shared our personal stories or memories connected to our choice.

Introductions workshop:As people with marginalised identities, our first meetings can be leaden with weight: we are made aware of the prejudices that dictate how the world meets us and so I have been working with this idea of introduction and where we have control over this. Throughout the Hvileåret workshops at Bergen Kunsthall, we practiced a number of different ways to introduce ourselves to each other and I extended on of these exercises during the retreat for Black women +.

So often we can’t find the right words to describe how we are feeling, but then we read a book, or listen to a song- and it says exactly what we have been trying to say. For this exercise, each person was invited to share a quote that had meaning for them. We made a copies for each other in a kind of exquisite corpse, making a collection of textual portraits of our collective. The quotes came from music, books, speeches and banners.
Many thanks to Røst AIR and Elin Már Øyen Vister.

The Supplementary School Film Club.2023.Intersectional film club.
The Supplementary School Film Club is an intersectional film club hosted by artist, Amber Ablett at NO GOODS where we prioritise the stories, needs and comfort of those marginalised by our society. We watch films together to look at the intersections of oppressive structures and how different communities tackle and dismantle them. Each month, an invited guest selects the film and gives a short introduction about how the film has affected their thoughts and practice, opening up a space for discussion and conversation after the film. All events are free and we hope you can join the whole series!
The SSFC takes direct inspiration from The Black Supplementary School Movement begun in 1960s Britain by West Indian communities to fill the gaps about the breadth of the British experience and history left out by mainstream education.

Hvileåret x Hearing Home, a retreat for Black women +, 2024.

Hvileåret
2022- ongoing.
Research project, workshops, text, sound.Hvileåret is a multi-year, multi-stranded particpatory and research-led project looking at the role of rest in liberation work. Inspired by nature and agricultural cycles such as crop rotation and letting land lie fallow, Hvileåret explores how rest can be reclaimed as a political and generative act by those excluded from dominant cultural narratives.
Rather than viewing rest as the opposite of physical action or mental activation , Hvileåret explores rest as the opposite of mental and emotional exhaustion and overwhelm that comes from living in an oppressive society (that consistently and systematically denies and marginalises your existence).

We look at ways of organising found in the natural world that offer alternatives, and resistances, to the structures that shape and shrink us, to help us reframe, imagine and re-create rest as an inherent state of being.

Beginning in 2022, it has taken shape through workshops, installations, residencies and writing, engaging those working with care, activism and marginalised experience.

The Other is Still Defined by The Dominant.

2021.
Tape markings on floor, an invitation to navigate between different parts of ourselves.

Along the wall, on the floor, at one end of a room, it is written: THE DOMINANT. Along the opposite wall, on the floor, it is written: THE OTHER IS STILL DEFINED BY THE DOMINANT.

Lines run between the two walls and there is a large circle in the middle.

These markings are taken from a workshop I held in February 2021 with Gestalt therapist and professor Vikram Kollmannskog. In the workshop, BIPOC participants were invited to explore the in-between states of belonging and navigating between different parts of our identity.

These markings, outside of the workshop, extend the question further. To those identities who have been “othered”, whether this is race, sexuality, gender, ability….- how does a person move between the dominant cultural identity and the other parts of themselves. How they are seen on the outside and how they feel inside?

This invitation takes the gestalt theory or polarities as its starting point.

Every human has conflicting parts within their identity- these markings act as an invitation to explore these parts of ourselves as we move between the different states.

What is the word for the opposite of the dominant? We couldn’t find one. The other is still defined by the dominant. What is other has been othered.
