Hvileåret x Hearing Home, a retreat for Black women +, 2024.

Hvileåret
2022- ongoing.
Research project, workshops, text, sound.

Hvileåret is a multi-year, multi-stranded particpatory and research-led project looking at the role of rest in liberation work. Inspired by nature and agricultural cycles such as crop rotation and letting land lie fallow, Hvileåret explores how rest can be reclaimed as a political and generative act by those excluded from dominant cultural narratives.

Rather than viewing rest as the opposite of physical action or mental activation , Hvileåret explores rest as the opposite of mental and emotional exhaustion and overwhelm that comes from living in an oppressive society (that consistently and systematically denies and marginalises your existence).

We look at ways of organising found in the natural world that offer alternatives, and resistances, to the structures that shape and shrink us, to help us reframe, imagine and re-create rest as an inherent state of being.

Beginning in 2022, it has taken shape through workshops, installations, residencies and writing, engaging those working with care, activism and marginalised experience.
